Structuring this book is difficult.
How do I arrange what happened in a way that's interesting and compelling both to myself and total strangers?
It has to be linear (or does it?). Time and events build on each other and change me. They can't be separated (or can they?).
Do I adopt the straight journal style like Dracula?
Do I mash up the daily journal with side narratives like The Martian?
Do I merge days together if they follow a theme?
Or do I keep days separate even when they share an event or theme?
Google "novel structure" or "memoir structure" and you will find many ideas.
You can either go chronological (already mulling that one), explore the before and after, do character studies, go down the whirlpool, follow the list, pull the narrative trick, highlight the item, or spin around the figure eight (all great ideas from Amy Jo Burnsin).
Now...which one do I use? That's the million dollar question.
Turns out, in writing as well as in daily life, structure is elusive.
